Some Popular Types of Vegetarian Diets

Many diet programs are available right now. Everyone can choose the most suitable diet program depending on their preference. There can be many reasons in choosing the best diet. Among many kinds of diet, vegetarian becomes one of the most famous one. This is not a new type of diet, but it gets more popular now since people start to do the diet. When people talk about this diet, most of them may think that it is about consuming fruits and vegetables while avoiding the animal-derived foods. However, there are actually many types of vegetarian diets. Each of them has specific characteristic.

Vegetarian diets have some variations. It depends on the type of foods that should be included and excluded from the lists of menus and ingredients. It is important to know some popular types before starting the vegetarian diet program. 

  1. Lacto-ovo-vegetarian
    This is the first type of vegetarian diet. The specific foods that can be included in the menu are described in the list. The word “lacto” refers to milk, but is not only limited to the milk. In fact, it covers all dairy products. Then, the word “ovo” refers to eggs. In this type of diet, animal-derived products are excluded from the ingredients, but it is still allowed to have dairy products and eggs for the foods. 
  2. Lacto-vegetarian
    Next, there is lacto-vegetarian. The term of this diet program also shows the meaning of animal-derived products that still can be consumed. In its name, this still mentions “lacto” so it is possible to have dairy products, such as milk, yogurt, and cheese.  However, meat, pork, poultry, and other animal-derived products are excluded.
  3. Ovo-vegetarian
    The name of this diet also explains that eggs are included in the lists. However, meats, poultry, fish, dairy products are excluded. Of course, eggs can be cooked in many ways, starting from hard-boiled eggs to scrambled eggs. That is why this is also one of the popular types of vegetarian diets.
  4. Flexitarian diet
    Next, there is flexitarian. From its name, it can be understood that it is a flexible vegetarian. In other words, it does not show strict rules regarding the composition of foods. The main ingredients still emphasize fruits and vegetables. However, it is still possible to have animal products occasionally. Mostly, the animal-derived products are only for the source of protein, so it will not take much portion in each serving.
  5. Vegan
    Some people may think that vegan and vegetarian are two similar terms. In fact, it is not totally the same. Vegetarian are the general term, and vegan is one of the types of vegetarian. In vegan diet, there is no animal-derived product. In other words, there are only plant-based foods. All forms of meats, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy products are excluded. Mostly, the main reason is about the ethic in which people should not consume animals. 
  6. Pescatarian diet
    This is also one of the types of vegetarian diets. However, this type of diet includes fish. The term uses Italian word “pesce” that means fish. In addition, there are also some people who consider that it is still fine to have eggs and dairy products, but there are also people who think that it only allows fish as the source of animal-based protein.
