Weight Loss Surgery

Weight loss surgery, also referred to as bariatric or gastrointestinal surgery, is designed to reduce severe obesity in patients.

Weight Loss Surgical Procedures

Gastrointestinal surgical procedures include: Liposuction, Adjustable Gastric Banding (AGB), Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG), Roux-en-Y-Gastric Bypass (RGB), Biliopancreatic Diversion (BPD) and Duodenal Switch (BPD/DS). More common names include: stomach bypass, stomach stapling, stomach balloon or lap band®. Less common weight loss surgical procedures include jaw-wiring.

Weight loss surgery has a direct impact on obesity, although for lasting weight control it must be accompanied by weight-related lifestyle changes in the form of diet modification and increased physical exercise. A patient's commitment to these lifestyle changes is an essential element in the long term success of any weight loss surgery.

Weight Loss Surgery - An Effective Option for Obesity

Gastrointestinal surgery is the best option for people who are severely obese and cannot lose weight by traditional means or who suffer from serious obesity-related health problems. The surgery causes weight loss by restricting food intake and, in some operations, interrupting the digestive process.

Weight Loss Surgery - Patient Candidates

People who may consider gastrointestinal surgery include those with a body mass index (BMI) above 40 - about 100 pounds of overweight for men and 80 pounds for women. See Body Mass Index Chart

People with a BMI between 35 and 40 may also be candidates for surgery if they also suffer from life threatening cardiopulmonary problems, or obesity-induced physical problems that are seriously interfering with lifestyle.
