Weight Loss PlateauA weight loss plateau is a temporary pause in weight loss. It often occurs during the first 4-6 weeks of following a weight loss diet, although it may reoccur periodically thereafter. It happens to Vegetarians and meat-eaters! What Causes a Weight Loss PlateauSeveral things may cause a weight loss plateau. Sometimes your body simply wants a 'rest' in order to get used to a sudden reduction in calories. This is quite normal when dieting and may well be beneficial. Or, if you reduce your calorie-intake too low (eg. 1200 calories or less) your body may believe that this lack of calories signals lack of food or a famine. Result? It slows down your metabolism (your rate of calorie-expenditure) in order to conserve calories. A weight loss plateau triggered by a reduction in metabolic rate may also be caused by going too long without food. So ideally eat something (e.g. piece of fruit) every 3 hours (women) or 5 hours (men). This reassures your body that food is plentiful and facilitates calorie-expenditure.
