Weight Loss Plateau

A weight loss plateau is a temporary pause in weight loss. It often occurs during the first 4-6 weeks of following a weight loss diet, although it may reoccur periodically thereafter. It happens to Vegetarians and meat-eaters!

What Causes a Weight Loss Plateau

Several things may cause a weight loss plateau. Sometimes your body simply wants a 'rest' in order to get used to a sudden reduction in calories. This is quite normal when dieting and may well be beneficial.

Or, if you reduce your calorie-intake too low (eg. 1200 calories or less) your body may believe that this lack of calories signals lack of food or a famine. Result? It slows down your metabolism (your rate of calorie-expenditure) in order to conserve calories.

A weight loss plateau triggered by a reduction in metabolic rate may also be caused by going too long without food. So ideally eat something (e.g. piece of fruit) every 3 hours (women) or 5 hours (men). This reassures your body that food is plentiful and facilitates calorie-expenditure.

How to Overcome a Weight Loss Plateau

In most cases, just be patient - the weight loss plateau will end and weight loss will resume.

Alternatively, you may raise your metabolism by increasing your activity level. Boosting your activity level will boost your metabolism and should re-start weight loss.
