Vegetarianism AwarenessIn the USA, where every month has several such designations, a dietitian at Kansas State University is promoting vegetarianism in October. While it is true that with careful planning vegetarianism is compatible with health, its promotion should not be based on misinformation. The oft-repeated view that "vegetarians have lower mortality from heart disease and cancer" is misleading because such a lifestyle has never been compared to one including lean meat and reduced-fat dairy products. Thus while vegetarians may well, as claimed, typically consume less saturated fat and cholesterol, so do non-vegetarians who simply choose reduced-fat alternatives among animal foods. Nonetheless, we feel the benefits of vegetarianism together no doubt with accompanying lifestyle changes, mean that vegetarian diets - or semi-vegetarian diets represent a step in the right nutritional direction.
