Non-Vegetarian Foods Found in 'Vegetarian'
Recipes
'Vegetarian' recipes and 'vegetarian' meals
can contain non vegetarian foods. So if you enjoy cooking but wish to
practice strict vegetarianism, beware the following foods/ ingredients
when following 'vegetarian' recipes.
Foods/Ingredients to Avoid in Vegetarian
Recipes
The following list of non-vegetarian foods
to avoid in vegetarian recipes is not exhaustive and is included
for general informational purposes only.
Albumen
Derived from eggs, unless stated.
Aspic
Savoury jelly derived from meat or fish.
Biscuits/Cookies
Usually contain animal fats.
Bread
Many large producers use vegetable based emulsifiers (E471, E472 etc).
Some bakers grease the tins with animal fat.
Breakfast Cereals
Often fortified with vitamin D3.
Broth/Stock
May contain animal fat.
Cheese
Many cheeses are produced using animal rennet.
Chewing Gum
Sometimes contains glycerine.
Chocolate
Beware whey and emulsifiers.
Emulsifiers
May not be vegetarian.
Fatty Acids
May be of animal origin.
French Fries
Often cooked in animal fat.
Gelatin/Gelatine
A gelling agent derived from animals. Vegetarian alternatives include
Agar Agar, Carrageen and Gelozone.
Glycerine/Glycerol
May be produced from animal fats.
Gravy
Vegetarian gravy mixes are available.
Ice Cream
Usually include dairy fats, sometimes eggs.

Recipe
Isinglass
A food/drink processing agent derived from the swim bladders of fish.
Jello/Jelly
Usually contains gelatine.
Margarine
May contain animal fats, fish oils, vitamin D3, whey, gelatine.
Pasta
May contain eggs.
Pastry
May contain animal fat or egg.
Pepsin
Pig enzyme, used like rennet.
Pill Capsules
Usually made from gelatine.
Potato Chips
May contain whey (as part of flavoring) and yeast extract.
Rennet
An enzyme taken from a calf's stomach, used in the cheese making process.
Sweets
Boiled sweets and mints may contain gelatin.
Whey
Whey and whey powder are usually by-products of the cheese making process
which mainly uses animal rennet.
Worcester Sauce
Usually contains anchovies.
Yogurt
Low fat yogurt sometimes contains gelatin.
Drinks to Avoid in Vegetarian Recipes
and Meals
Alcohol
Many alcoholic drinks are 'clarified' using animal ingredients. Spirits
are usually suitable for vegetarians.
Beer
Most "real" beers/ales and some bottled/canned beers and lagers
are 'clarified' with isinglass - an agent derived from the swim bladders
of certain fish.
Soft Drinks
Some canned Orange drinks wiith added beta-carotene contain gelatin.
Wine
May have been 'clarified' using isinglass.
