Vegetarian Nutrition - A Short Summary

Vegetarianism is certainly a healthy option but only if your vegetarian diet plan is balanced. This means eating a variety of foods including grains, fruit and vegetables, beans, pulses, nuts or seeds, a small amount of fat, with or without dairy products.

For an ultra-simple Vegetarian Diet which you can adjust to any calorie-level, see Vegetarian Diet Program

Easy on High-Fat, Convenience Foods

Despite vegetarian diets generally being lower in fat, vegetarians still need to ensure that their consumption of high-fat foods, especially dairy products, convenience foods and margarine and plant oils, is not excessive.

Boost Iron-Uptake

Vegetarians generally have satisfactory iron levels. That said, it is recommended that dietary sources of iron are consumed together with vitamin C rich foods or drinks to facilitate iron absorption.

If Vegan, Buy Fortified Foods for Optimum Nutrition

Vegans should ensure their diets include foods which are fortified with vitamin B12 and vitamin D. These may include certain yeast extracts, vegetable burger mixes, soy milks, margarines and breakfast cereals. See also Vegan Nutrition

Vegetarian Nutrition for Children

A vegetarian diet is fine for children and provides all the nutrients required for normal growth and development. Vegetarian kids are similar in height and weight to non-vegetarian kids and are less likely to be overweight.

Vegetarian Nutrition for Infants - Less Fiber, More Energy

Standard adult vegetarian diets (which are low in fat and high in fibre) can fill up infants (under 5 years) before they have ingested sufficient energy and nutrients. So vegetarian diet plans for infants should include fewer high-fiber foods and more energy and nutrient-dense foods.
