Vegetarian Foods - Soy Milk

Soy milk can be bought in a variety of forms (sweetened/unsweetened) as well as different flavours (chocolate, strawberry, carob or vanilla). It is available in all wholefood shops and supermarkets.

Soy milk can be used as a straight substitute for dairy milk when cooking. You can use it in tea or coffee, make rice puddings, cakes, custard or sauces with it.

If you don't like the taste of one soy milk, try another brand. They all have their own subtle flavours.

Compared to regular dairy milk, soy milk has a lower fat content, a lower proportion of saturated fat, and no cholesterol. It is low in carbohydrate and provides a good source of protein. Some brands may be fortified with calcium, vitamin-D2, vitamin-B12 and vitamin-B2. Soy milk provides an alternative to cow's milk for people who are lactose intolerant.

In addition to soy milk, most supermarkets have a range of flavored soy desserts and soy yogurts.
