Fad Diets - Not Healthy

Some fad diets specify (or exclude) one particular food or type of food. Other fad diets are fasting or 'cleansing' programs. Still other fad diets involve combining different foods at different times.

All this is bad diet-nutrition. The No 1. rule of good diet nutrition is:

Eat a balanced diet that includes a variety of foods.

Fad Diets are Plain Unhealthy

Fad diets may cause you to develop nutritional deficiencies, because no one type of food has all the nutrients necessary for good health. Also, note that fasting or 'cleansing' is diet-speak for starving. That's why you should eat moderate amounts from all food groups, not large amounts of a few special foods.

Fad Diets - Containing 'Magical' Foods

Some fad diets promote "fat-burning" foods or foods with "special" properties that magically use up more calories than they contain (eg. negative calorie food diets).

Unfortunately, there are no foods that have special "fat-burning" or "negative calorie" properties.

Fad Diets - Typically Very Low in Calories

A great many fad diet plans are based on a very low calorie content.

Here's how such a fad diet works:

  • The Fad Diet Name
    The Brussels Sprouts Diet!
  • The Fad Diet Claim
Stick a Brussels Sprout in each Ear, follow the enclosed diet program and Lose 20 Pounds Weight!
  • The Diet Calorie Content
    About 800-1000 calories
  • Weight Loss Result?
We lose weight - not 20 pounds perhaps, but some

Now Answer This Weight Loss Question

Did we lose weight on this diet plan because of the "magical" effect of putting Brussel Sprouts in our ears, or because we were limiting our calorie-intake to 800-1000 calories?

Fad Diets and Weight Cycling

Fad dieting can sometimes lead to weight-cycling or yo-yo dieting - i.e. weight loss, followed by regain, followed by weight loss then regain etc. New research suggests that such weight cycling may lead to obesity.

Conclusion: Avoid Fad Diets

Avoid fad diets and fad dieting. Instead, pay attention to the Food Pyramid Guidelines and eat a balanced diet that includes foods from ALL food groups.
