Diverticular Disease, Diverticulitis and VegetariansDiverticular disease affects the colon and symptoms include lower abdominal pain and disturbed bowel habit. It occurs often in western countries where fiber-intake is low. One study found diverticular disease to be less frequent in vegetarians, with 12% of vegetarians studied having diverticular disease compared with 33% of non-vegetarians. This is thought to be due to the increased fibre of vegetarian diets. Vegetarian Diets Higher in FiberThe high fiber content of vegetarian diets has also been linked with decreased incidence of constipation, appendicitis, irritable bowel syndrome, haemorrhoids and varicose veins. Vegetarian Diet InformationVegetarianism is a healthy option and vegetarian
diets can be perfectly healthy eating plans but care should be taken to
ensure optimum nutrition. So, whether following an ovo-lacto or other
type of vegetarian food plan, or vegan diet, for a healthy body and weight
make it a balanced eating plan and take regular exercise. Always consult
a doctor before beginning a weight loss diet or new fitness routine.
